These problems in digital still cameras are caused by different reasons;

1. Dust inside barrels and between the gears of the lens
The barrels lens have small guides, any dust particle or even the fiber of the camera case, can be the cause of problems with the lens functionality, any particle obstructing the guides avoid the ability of the lens to come up or retract. In order to repair this issue, the lens is taken out of the camera, is carefully disassembled with the proper tools and expertise, cleaned and greased and assembled again returning its functionality.

2. Camera dropped or suffers an impact

If the camera is dropped or suffers an impact, depending of the impact (strength, angle, position of the lens at time of impact) the barrels lens can be moved out of the guides. In this case, a full reassemble of the lens is done in order to place the lens parts in its place again. The use of appropriate tools can make this a successful job or not. Each piece is integral and must be assembled carefully to guarantee resolution.
However, if the impact is more severe, the guides or gears can be damaged or the barrels broken. In this case the replacement of the damaged part is needed.

3. Battery Related
The battery is the source of energy to the camera, while that seems obvious the care that is given to that battery greatly impacts how the camera performs and the full problem free functioning of the camera. Here are some of the battery related problem that greatly disrupt and affect the well functioning of your camera.

Battery Do's

• Use batteries with full charge
• Replace batteries with manufacturer suggested battery only
• Clean contact points with soft clean dry cloth

• Take the battery out with the camera still on
• Take the battery out while turning the camera on
• Use a battery that is run down or not fully charged

Batteries run the camera and power issues are to blame for damaged lens sensors. When this happens the sensors need replacement.

4. Camera Usage and Care

Constant use of the camera, depending on the camera life and care, are also reasons that cause lens malfunctions.  Constant use and movement affect the sensors flat power cables. Every time the lens is coming out or retracting, whether to take a picture or even when the camera is zooming in or out, or focus. Normal part of camera usage wear and tear.
