Can camera water damage be repaired?
When camera water damage happens, acting quickly is the best step! In digital camera water repair, consider first of all, there are two types of water damage; Fresh water and Salt Water. Fresh water damage is not as severe as salt water damage and is very obvious to the service technician as to what kind of liquid has contaminated the circuit board assembly. Once we have determined the type of damage, we need to determine if the device was in the off or on position when the damage occurred, the mode of the device determines the severity of the damage. An energized electronic circuit board experiencing a short circuit by water or any other conductive liquid will show physical damage, i.e., burnt components, curled or damaged traces, discoloration of CBA, etc. This type of damage merits replacement of complete circuit board. A de-energized circuit board exposed to conductive liquid will have a higher instance of intermittent failure and as water evaporates it leaves salt crystals. These salts crystallize out onto the board and then cause short circuits when the circuit board is eventually energized. In either case, the circuit board is cleaned, damaged components replaced, reflowed then given an operation check, at this stage the technician determines if the camera is ready for a stress test, further troubleshooting and repair or complete circuit board replacement is required.
